You will need to write a short
essay regarding the issues revealed in the Oscar-winning documentary “American
Factory”. You may conceive of what the documentary shows as a case study. You
do not have to watch the documentary itself. You may refer to the materials I
provide below or find other relevant sources of information yourselves. Make
sure you duly cite and reference them in your essay

The key is to reinterpret the
story using the concepts and frameworks we discuss in the class, in a
comprehensive but cogent way. Recombining others' reviews simply will not
work. You may consider answering:
o
Why did the MNE invest there?
What was the motivation and what encouraged its investment?
o
What were the major challenges?
What were the root causes of these challenges?
o
What did this MNE do to counter
the situation? What could it do otherwise? Why?
o
Preferably, source other
similar cases (from the media, industry reports, and academic research) to
compare and contrast with this one. Are these challenges typical of MNEs or
certain types of MNEs? What did other firms do in addressing these challenges?
This is preferable but not required.
-
MY TIP? DO NOT BLAME EVERYTHING ON CULTURAL CLASH
-
You need to write it up as an essay. Do not submit bullet points
-
Marking rubric à please pay attention to his
o Summary of the case (10%) à provide a concise but clear summary
of the case. Pay attention to the theoretical logic behind what happened (i.e.
investment, motivation, location choice, entry mode choice, etc)
o Identification and analysis
of the problems (30%) à what were the major challenges?
What were the root causes of these challenges? No need to elaborate on
everything: instead, keep it focused and highlight the main issues worth
discussing
o Integration of theory (30%) à reinterpret the story
using the concepts and frameworks we discuss in the class (you do not need to reference materials/theories from the lecture
notes but if you get theories from anything other than class materials then you
need to reference) Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the
theoretical concepts, and that you can link the theories to a real-world case
o Recommendation and insights
(20%)
§ What did this MNE do to
counter the situation? What could it do otherwise? Why? you need to provide
critical insights backed by cogent arguments
