Contemporary Management Technique Research Paper

INDIVIDUAL LEARNING PROJECT 2 INSTRUCTIONS
Contemporary Management Technique Research Paper

Based on your evaluation of an organization or a segment of an organization in Individual Learning Project 1, select 1 contemporary management technique (listed in the Blocher & Hicks text) not currently being implemented in the organization/segment that could aid the organization/segment in achieving its critical success factors (CSFs).

Using the electronic databases provided by the Jerry Falwell Library and other sources, search for journal articles in professional, peer-reviewed accounting and business journals that pertain to the contemporary management technique chosen.

Write a research paper in current APA format. The paper must be 10–15 double-spaced pages, with 1-inch margins and current APA pagination. The font must be 12-point Times New Roman. The paper must include references from at least 5 different sources. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page in addition to the essay pages. The title page and the reference page do not count as part of the 10–15-page length requirement.

The paper must address the following in order:
1. Rationale for the contemporary management technique selected
2. In-depth analysis of the technique, in which you fully describe the technique, its implementation process, its application by other organizations, its applicability to your organization/segment, and your plan for implementation

Additional guidelines:
1. Avoid using first and second person (e.g., “I,” “we,” “you,” etc.).
2. You must reference a minimum of your textbooks and 5 additional scholarly sources. Wikipedia, Investopedia, and the like are not considered scholarly sources and should not be used. Any use of these sources will be grounds for a 50-point deduction.
3. Any personal communication should be cited appropriately within the text; however, citations of personal communication are not needed for the reference section.
4. An abstract and table of contents are not needed.

Business and Management Dissertation

Academic year and term:

Module title:
Business and Management Dissertation
Module code:

Module Convener:

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge outcomes – Students will be able to plan how to conduct a dissertation/thesis based on their own area of investigation which will consolidate their in-depth knowledge of business and management or of the specialism of their business degree and its relationship to the wider organisation.
Intellectual /transferable skills outcomes – Students will be able to identify and outline an appropriate approach to conduct a literature-based investigation, the results of which, through synthesis and evaluation, address a problem related to their degree discipline and/or its practice; plan which range of sources of information they will draw upon to support the investigation and which procedures and techniques will be appropriate to the analysis of a complex business situation. Students will be able to plan how they will demonstrate criticality (independent thinking) in the evaluation and synthesis of information relating to the discipline and/or its practice. They will be able to present their plans/proposal in an academic style.

Type of assessment:
Thesis involving extended critical literature review not exceeding 8,000 words (excluding bibliography): 100%

The applicable elements of the research proposal (3000 words) submitted as a summative assessment in Semester A (Dissertation part 1) can be carried over to (used in) the summative assessment in term B. Using the same elements verbatim will not be treated as self-plagiarism. It is however advisable to improve on the work already submitted rather than re-submitting the same material verbatim (yet no penalty will be incurred for doing that). Please note that your task in term 1 involved the elements which will no longer be applicable to a thesis involving extended critical literature review – particularly sections describing the empirical data gathering process (which is not part of this assessment).

Assessment deadline:

Instructions for assessment

Normally, thesis will be based on the research problem which you have identified in term 1. Since you are no longer required to gather and analyze primary data or conduct secondary data analysis, it may be the case that your topic will need to be reformulated in discussion with your supervisor. However, it is advisable that your topic remains as close as possible to the one originally formulated.
In order to address your research problem, you will conduct a critical literature review. Your critical literature review will normally include the elements of:
  1. Theoretical review: examining the body of theory that has accumulated in regard to an issue, concept, theory or phenomenon. It is helpful to structure it according to the main themes (which you need to identify).
  2. Integrative review: critiquing and synthesizing the representative literature on a topic in an integrative way to generate new frameworks and perspectives on a topic
Therefore, the critical literature review is not limited to identifying, arranging and discussing literature relevant to your topic (theoretical review), but it also asks you to:
1) synthesize the literatures – which conclusions can be drawn from combing two or more literature sources, do they agree/disagree with one another, do they complement each other, do they even use the terms in the same way
2) position your own inquiry against these literatures – if I am exploring the problem involving X, Y and Z, then how are X, Y and Z informed by the literature, and so how does my overall problem relate to what the literature is saying.
3) explain what have you learned from these literatures – which new perspectives on your topic has the literature review helped you develop, do you see your initial research problem in a new light, and how.

In conducting the literature review it is strongly suggested that you use, in that order:
1)      Academic journals and books
2)      Handbooks
3)      Official documents produced by established organizations, where the author/organization is known.
Avoid using any tertiary sources, such as Wikipedia.
It is strongly advised that you consult Saunders, M, Lewis, P. & Thornhill, A. (2016) ‘Critically Reviewing the Literature’, chapter 3, in: Research Methods for Business Students. Harlow, Essex: Pearson.

THESIS STRUCTURE
The thesis will normally have the following parts:
  • Title Page
  • Acknowledgements
  • Abstract (up to 250 words)
  • Contents Page
  • Introduction (including a clear explanation of importance of your research problem or your argument to others and why it is of interest to you – up to 500 words)
  • Literature Review (see ‘Instructions for assessment’ for explanation of key terms):
-          Introduction, explaining how you have planned and executed your literature review, how have you identified the relevant literatures and why you think they are relevant (500-700 words)
-          Theoretical literature review, preferably organized in themes, in relation to your research problem/argument (2000-2500 words)
-          Synthesis of the reviewed literature (1000-1500)
-          Clear explanation how you position your own inquiry against the literature (500-800 words)
-          Explanation what have you learned from the literature (1000-1200 words)

  • Conclusions (summarizing the main findings and how they inform your research problem or argument) – 400-500 words
  • References (not included in the word count. Provide details of the reading materials you used and noted in the text of your thesis. The list needs to be in alphabetical order and follow the Harvard system of referencing).

Please do not include appendices.

Pharmacist-In-Charge Major Report

MAJOR REPORT SP4, 2020

The scenario is that you have been made pharmacist-in-charge (PIC) of an independent rural pharmacy (comprising 2 other pharmacists and 5 assistants), about 3 hours north of Adelaide. There is another pharmacy which is situated at the other end of this mid-sized town. Your pharmacy is situated at the end of town closest to Adelaide. The clientele consists of mainly farmers and families, who make up 60% of your business, plus 20% indigenous, and historically 20% tourists, both local and international, who used to visit before the pandemic. The number of local tourists is expected to increase greatly once travel restrictions within Australia are lifted, but international travel may be restricted until mid-2021.
a)      Spend about 450- 500 words on each of the following topics
                                                 i.    Accounting / Finance: Discuss the importance of cash flow to the pharmacy and why major accounting reports may not provide the information you need to monitor this.
ii.    Implementing a Creative environment: The owner of the pharmacy wants you to encourage creativity amongst the staff in the hope that it may produce some ideas that may be used for marketing purposes.
iii.    Leadership: Outline how you, personally, would attempt to develop a transformational leadership style to lead the staff, comprising the 2 other pharmacists and 5 assistants, giving details.
iv.    Marketing: How would you go about developing a general marketing plan to come up with a campaign to offer something different from the competitors?             (Ensure you refer to the scenario)
                                           v.     Motivation : Alice, one of the 5 pharmacy assistants, is in her early fifties and the oldest employee at the pharmacy. She has been divorced 3 times and is currently single. She has one son in his mid-20s who is currently in prison for drug-related offences. Alice has not worked much, since she had been supported by her husbands previously who generally wanted her to stay at home. Her only limited work experience has been in supermarkets, a fashion store and as a telemarketer. This is the first time she has worked in a pharmacy and she has only been there for 6 months. Sometimes she is a bit loud, and she loves talking about her extensive cruise experiences when she used to be married. You note she tends to wear highly fashionable clothes, and all her outfits are low cut. She enjoys talking to older male farmers who she believes may be wealthy and tries to get to know a bit about their personal background when they visit the pharmacy. You note that she seems bored with the routine of assisting with the dispensary of scripts and managing stock. Her knowledge of pharmacy products appears quite limited and she makes errors. Since the pharmacy is open 7 days a week due to it being an essential service there needs to be some flexibility regarding availability, but Alice always has reasons to not work on Saturday and Sunday mornings due to “prior engagements”, although there does not seem to be to do much to do in this country town these days. In any spare times she loves to read fashion magazines and she has mentioned that she believes she is creative. She tends to have a smoke outside during any breaks she has, but some customers have complained about her nicotine-breath to you. You wonder why she was employed by the owner in the first place, only to find out she is the owner’s sister. Explain how you would apply the Behaviour Modification model on Alice to modify her behaviour to what you consider would benefit the pharmacy.
vi.    Change: To compete with other pharmacies in general which have a focus on discount, the owner has asked you to organise all staff to learn Arabic, Chinese and Hindi, since they believe Australia, and especially South Australia, will become a magnet for overseas tourists (due to our control of the corona virus), and once international travel restrictions have been lifted. What would you do to overcome staff resistance to this change?

b)      Rank the 6 topics from 1 to 6 in terms of which skill/ ability / knowledge you consider most valuable for a community pharmacist, giving reasons for each choice and why each one was ranked the position it was. Try to support your responses with the literature.
Writing the report:
·         Use Headings.
·         Type double-spaced for ease of reading and marking.
·         Be clear in your explanations and try to be as specific as possible rather than giving generic comments.
·         Make sure the literature is integrated by supporting your comments with reference to the literature.
·         Reference your material whenever you are stating something that is not generally known. (Check every sentence.) If you do not you may be penalised for plagiarism.
·         Use the Harvard style of referencing: author (year).
·         Include a reference list at the end.
NOTES ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT
This is to be an individual assignment. You may, for example, discuss the topic with others in the class, but you must produce an individual assignment which is your own work. Not to do so is plagiarism.

A minimum of 15 different academic references is required. (This means academic (peer reviewed/ refereed) journals and text-books, but excludes everything else, such as lectures, general web-sites such as consultancies’ promotional web-sites, government websites, company websites and sources like Wikipedia.)

Keep a copy of your assignment.

It must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document and should have student names and IDs listed on each page since no cover sheet is required.
Evidence of plagiarism will cause a penalty, which may include a zero for the report.
